The old mailman was going to retire. Because he worked for a post office located in a remote mountainous area, he decided to pass down his career to his son, Tom. He led Tom to recognize the winding trails in the woods and on the hills. He taught Tom how to avoid hornets or snakes, and how to deal with the accidents on the road. At the terminus they stopped in front of a shaggy cottage. The old mailman knocked at the door and yelled, "Betty, mail!" From the cottage came out an old woman, and Tom noticed that her eyes were turbid and blind. The old mailman took out a letter and began to read for the old woman, "Daer grandmother, how have you been these lately? I began feeling cold in this city, Be careful about your health. " The old mailman stopped here and gave the letter to Tom, implying that it was his turn to continue. To tom's surprise, it wasn't even a letter; it was blank paper! Tom wanted to seek help from his father but in vain. The old woman was waiting. Tom stammered, " I got the promotion last month......well,I was considering......that I should get you here to live with me." The old mailman hinted that he shouldn't have said so, but the old woman smiled and asked, "Will you read the mails for me henceforth? You sounds really like my grandchild." Tom nodded and later sensed that she couldn't see,"Yes."he replied and signed in relief.
For the next two years, Tom weekly brought a blank letter to Aunt Betty and read for her. Sometimes he enclosed some money. Like his father,Tom strove to made up stories for Aunt Betty and hid the truth that her grandchild has forsaken her. He thought that this would last a few more years or so, but things didn't go as he had expected. Aount Betty became stricken with severe illness and bedridden as old age crept up on her. Some children who lived near her ran to call Tom one morning when he was delivering mail, "Aunt Betty wanted to meet you now. She said she had something important for you." Tom immediately headed for Aunt Betty's cottage. When he entered the cottage, the old floor squeaked. He could see that Aunt Betty was lingering aroung the gate of death. "My boy, under my bed is my treasure, and now I will leave it to you." she said with a smile and closed her eyes for good. With trembling hands, Tom opened the box under her bed. A whirling wing blew through the window and swept the things out; there were full of his previous fake letters! Underneath was the money he enclosed with the letters. The pieces of blank paper flew in the wind as if they were butterflies. Gazing at the scene, Tom burst into tears.
